Inspiration from the Global Village

The love of learning, the sequestered nooks,
And all the sweet serenity of books.
~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

“Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I answer all my children’s letters — sometimes very hastily — but this one I lingered over. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.” Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it.”

That is what books do to us too. We love them so much we sometimes want to eat them up. In the spirit of book love, we are continuing our annual summer book series with two great reads. We hope you join us for the journey. Stay tuned: more information coming on Wednesday.

Revisiting for revival

I notice as a chronicler of many things that the meat and wisdom of my soul can be revisited and recognized. That  sometimes...the truth in the song I sang in a different dream belongs in this one.

A Trusted Voice

Harvesting her music
I am renewed
connecting to the
passionate undertakings
wrapped up
in sinews and skin
chased by the
bada bee bada bum
beating dance of the drum
meaningless to the uninitiated

the voice doesn't need to sing
merely a whispered "go"
ending a paralysis of conservative
hypersuburban venom
I can run
run until it fades behind me
and my own song can
rise up
and dance on the wind

balanced on the hot breath of
a new melody created with
intertwining strings of curled hair
glinting in the sunlight
frizzing as
a hot neck sways
and pops
and locks into place
a dream
of total release.

Inspiration from the Global Village

Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.

--Ralph Waldo Emerson
